Introduction to Vegetable Paper and Natural Inks

During these 3 days, you'll be introduced to the art of creating sheets of paper from plant fibers, with which you'll make a bound A5 booklet, and you'll learn how to make inks with what nature provides.

Over the course of 2 days, you'll discover this astonishing world, revealing all that nature has to offer. Here's a basic program for this workshop.

Day 1: Plant Harvesting and Pulp Preparation

9:00 - 9:30 am: Welcome and presentation

  • Welcome coffee for participants.
  • Introduction of trainer and participants.
  • Introduction to the course program and objectives.

9:30 am - 10:30 am: Field trip and plant harvesting

  • Outing to collect plants and plant materials (leaves, grasses, bark, etc.).
  • Identification and selection of plants suitable for papermaking.

10:30 - 12:00: Preparing and cooking herbs

  • Explanation of plant preparation steps (washing, cutting, etc.).
  • Demonstrate how to cook plants to obtain vegetable pulp.
10:30 am - 12:00 pm: Vat paper making
 
  • Demonstration of papermaking in the vat as it has been done since the beginning.
  • Hands-on workshop: participants start making their first sheets of paper.
  • Pressing and drying of manufactured sheets.

12h00 - 13h00: Packed lunch

1:00 pm - 2:00 pm: Rinsing and fiber filtering

  • Rinsing fibers after baking to remove impurities.
  • Practical workshop: Participants take part in rinsing and filtering fibers.

2:15pm - 4:00pm: Making paper in a vat (continuation)

 

Day 2: Making Leaves and Creating a Book

9:00 am - 10:30 am: Pulp preparation

  • Reuse the pulp prepared the day before.
  • Hands-on workshop: Participants prepare pulp to make paper sheets.

10:30 am - 12:00 pm: Making Paper Sheets

  • Hands-on workshop: Participants make their own sheets of paper from pulp.
  • Pressing and drying techniques for new leaves.

12h00 - 13h00: Packed lunch

1:30 - 4:30 p.m.: Sheet finishing and Book making

  • Paper sheet finishing: pressing, drying,
  • Introduction to simple binding to create a book.
  • Hands-on workshop: participants start making their own little book with the sheets of paper they've made.

3:00 pm - 3:15 pm: Break

15h15 - 16h30: Finalization of the Book

  • Hands-on workshop: participants complete their book.
  • Cover personalization and decoration techniques.

This course ends around 4:30 - 5:00 p.m.
